How can oat microworms be grown?
Oat microworms (Panagrellus redivivus) are nematode worms. Due to their size (less than 1.5 mm) and high protein content, they are an ideal food for fry that are not yet large enough to be fed with newly hatched brine shrimp.
Cultivation:
A base of moistened oat flakes (100 g oats, 100 ml water, or milk) has given very good results as a medium.
We sow 2 g of microworms. After five days, we already see masses on the walls. They are collected with a brush and added directly to the aquarium or to a glass of water from the aquarium.
After 3-4 weeks, the culture begins to give off an unpleasant smell. It is advisable to start a new culture in the third week. As with all cultures, it is advisable to double the strains or start them fortnightly in this case.
They are photophobic (protect from light). We must cover the containers with cloth to avoid leaks and maintain an optimal temperature of 26-28 oC. Other authors mention 18-24ºC as optimal.
